Chartreuse Tea Review

Chartreuse TeaLast weekend I visited Greenfield Village with my family. It is one of our favorite places to visit and we go often. They were holding a special Fall Flavors event along with a Farmer's Market. One of the vendors in the market was Chartreuse Tea. They are a made in Michigan company that features organic, caffeine free herbal teas.

I was first introduced to their teas while shopping at Whole Foods. The bright, chartreuse tea tin caught my eye. For an end of the year teacher's gift, I gave my daughter's two teachers a tin of the Peaceful Bliss blend. Highly appropriate I thought.

Anyway the Chartreuse Table at the Farmer's Market was a loose leaf tea drinker's dream. They had about 10 of their teas ready for sampling. They were all so good. I got to try Hibiscus Quench, Pride of Africa, Citrus Sunrise, and Mountain Green.

Hibiscus Quench

Check out the rosebuds!

I brought home three of their teas. Hibiscus Quench is made with organic hibiscus, organic rosehips, organic lemongrass, organic orange peel, organic spearmint, organic lavender, organic red rose petals, and organic stevia.

Hibiscus Quench Steeped

I love the rich color.

Mountain Green is made with organic green rooibos (my preference over red rooibos), organic orange peel, and organic lemon myrtle.

They also gave me Solomon's Seal, which I have not tried yet. It is Solomon's Seal Root and organic brown rice. I have not tried it yet, but I wonder if it is like genmaicha tea.

I highly recommend you try their teas, especially if you are looking for a caffeine free, herbal tea that is also organic too. You can find their tea at Whole Foods stores in Michigan, Illinois, Missouri, Nebraska, and Wisconsin and online at Amazon.com.

Making Fast Iced Tea

Summer has been very hot so far and it has made my morning cup of hot tea very unappealing. I'm also not always the best at remembering to make up a pitcher of iced tea the night before, so I've been working on a system for making fast iced tea. This is what is working for me.

Step 1: Brew a cup of loose leaf tea in my usual way, perhaps adding more tea leaves than usual.

Making Iced Tea Fast

Step 2: Add 1 cup of ice to a 2 cup pyrex glass measuring cup. I use the pyrex measuring cup because it is made to hold both hot and cold liquids and I figure most people already have one in their kitchen.

Pyrex Measuring Cup with Ice

Step 3: Pouring the hot tea over the ice. Once it has cooled (and this usually happens fairly quickly) I pour it into the drinking glass of my choice.

Pour Tea Over Ice

Simple and fast! Plus I still get to enjoy my morning ritual of picking out a tea, using my tea kettle, and inhaling the nice aroma of a freshly steeped cup of loose tea.

Making Fast Iced Tea

Today's iced tea was made with American Tea Room's Immortal Green, a pyrex measuring cup, and my Kati loose tea brewing system.

How do you make iced tea? Any tips you would love to share, feel free to do so in the comments.  Thanks!

How to Make Iced Loose Tea

The weather has been so nice in Michigan for the last few days and iced tea has been a great way to get in my daily tea fix. I prefer to make mine with loose leaf tea, which means an extra step from using tea bags. It is definitely worth it and so very easy. I made a little video to show you how to make iced loose tea:

Basically I steep the tea in my tea pot first without an infuser basket and then I pour the tea over a strainer into a pitcher. Today I made a blend of Teavana's Sweet Amore and Plum Harvest. Unfortunately they are no longer making Plum Harvest, so I am going to have to substitute with something else when I use the last of mine. Sweet Fruit Garden Herbal Tea may work.

Kati Loose Tea System

Kati Loose Tea SystemRecently I received a package from Tea Forte and I am really excited to share it with you. It contained the new Kati Loose Tea System and samples of their new individually packaged loose leaf tea. They have created a simple way to brew loose tea.

It is a double walled ceramic mug that contains a stainless steel steeping basket and is topped with a lid to retain heat. The mug holds 12 ounces and is dishwasher safe (always a plus for me). You can get it in white, green, or with a grass print.

Tea Forte KatiThe perfect pairing is Tea Forte's Loose Tea Single Steeps. They have packaged five of their popular loose teas in easy to open, single serving packets. All you need to do is tear off the top, pour into the steeping basket, and add hot water. Green Tango, Chamomile Citron, Earl Grey, Forte Breakfast, and Ginger Lemongrass are available.

I created a little video review to show you more:

I really enjoyed the Green Tango. It is an organic green tea that is described as a Chinese Jade Wing green tea that is blended with South African green honeybush and tropical mangoes. A luscious blend that is smooth, fruity, and naturally sweet. I liked blend of peppermint and ginger that lingered on my tongue after drinking.

I highly recommend this mug. It is both beautiful and practical. I usually use mugs with handles, but I really like the smoothness of this mug and the double walled style means my hand is not overly hot when holding it.

Mighty Leaf Green Tea Tropical

Mighty Leaf Green Tea TropicalMighty Leaf Green Tea Tropical is one of my favorite teas that is in a tea bag. My husband and I recently attended a really fundraiser for my daughter's school. The event was held at a really nice local hotel with a very fancy ballroom. After dinner, the servers came around with the dessert course and I asked for a cup of tea. I was very pleased when he returned with a mini tea service with a choice of Mighty Leaf tea pouches.

This tea service contained a mug, teapot full of hot water, a choice of three teas, and a little pot of honey. I went with the Mighty Leaf Green Tea Tropical. They come individually wrapped in a cello wrap bag, perfect for keeping the tea fresh and throwing in your bag to take with you.

When you can't have loose leaf tea, a tea bag or pouch with full leaf tea is a close second. Mighty Leaf Teas are very full flavored. Order some Mighty Leaf Green Tea Tropical today and see what you think.

Teapot Strainers & Tea Infusers

Today I would like to discuss teapot strainers and tea infusers in a bit more depth.  Specifically how they should have some depth to them in order to allow the tea leaves to unfurl, expand and impart all of their goodness to hot water. Let's discuss the different types of loose leaf tea strainers out there.

  • Tea Infuser BallTea Infuser Ball - This type of infuser is good for brewing a single cup of tea.  It keeps the tea leaves contained, but not allow them to expand and unfurl much.  I find them a bit tricky to fill, so that takes some practice. Once you have it mastered though, this is a great way to steep tea.
  • Teapot StrainerTeapot Strainer - We love this option for its versatility.  It can sit inside the rim of our teapot or on the rim of a teacup.  All you have to do is put it in place, fill with tea leaves, and then pour water into it.  The tea leaves have a lot of room to expand and unfurl, plus the mesh is small enough that even rooibos tea is contained.  Cleanup is a breeze too.  Just rinse it out to remove the tea leaves and pop it in the dishwasher.

Whatever type of teapot strainer or tea infuser that you prefer, they are both great ways to enjoy loose leaf tea.  Right now they are 20% off at American Tea Room, along with their teapots, matcha, and accessories.  What is your favorite kind? Let us know in the comments below.

Spotted in the Store: Lipton Loose Leaf Tea

I was shopping the other day at Target and spotted this in the tea row.

Lipton Loose TeaI'm not sure how long Lipton Loose Tea has been available, but I'm not sure I have ever seen it at the store before.  I'm always on the lookout for different teas to try.   I didn't get any but may try it in the summer.  I do enjoy iced tea brewed from Lipton on occasion and this may be a better alternative.

Le Palais Gourmet is Now American Tea Room

American Tea Room Your Ultimate Tea ResourceLe Palais Gourmet has been a fixture in Beverly Hills for years.  Recently they have undergone a renovation of sorts, changing their name to better reflect their company.  They are now known as American Tea Room.  There were several reasons for the switch, including an easier name for their customers to remember.  It does not signal a change in their really great tea selection though.

Recently I received some tea samples and they are definitely my new favorite source of loose leaf tea.  The three varieties in our tea cabinet are Immortal Green, Tangier, and St. Tropez.

Immortal Green is a green tea blended with peach.  I have always loved the pairing of tea with peach and this is a really delightful one.  The green tea is a very high quality, the leave unfurl nicely in the water, and the tea is wonderful to drink.

Tangier is a very special black tea blend.  It is Ceylon black tea leaves with saffron and and apricot petals.  Very exquisite.  I could drink this tea all day long, either as a hot tea or an iced tea.

I am a big fan of Rooibos tea.  It is naturally caffeine free, so it is perfect to share with my daughter or the times when I do not want to be kept up late.  St. Tropez is a green Rooibos with red currants, blue mallow blossoms, and a hint of wild berries.  It is a nice fruity tea.  I've tried it hot, but think it would also make a really great iced tea.  I highly recommend this one.

American Tea Room is a great choice for loose leaf tea, tea pots, and other tea accessories.  They even have a selection of teas in pyramid shaped tea bags, perfect when you are on the go.  As they change over from Le Palais Gourmet, they are also having a sale on their teas.  Check them out today and buy some for your tea cabinet.
